The company has developed a system called Autopilot, which enables its vehicles to drive themselves in certain situations, with the supervision of a human driver. Tesla’s Autopilot – Autonomous Driver Assistance System

Tesla’s Autopilot is what’s known as an autonomous driver assistance system (ADAS). This means that it is not a fully self-driving system, but rather a feature that assists the driver with some aspects of driving, such as steering, accelerating, braking, changing lanes, parking, and navigating highways. The driver is still responsible for monitoring the road and the vehicle, and must be ready to take over at any time. Autopilot is designed to enhance safety and convenience behind the wheel, by reducing the driver’s workload and fatigue.

Tesla Vision

Tesla’s Autopilot relies on a system called Tesla Vision, which is a set of vision processing tools developed by Tesla. Tesla Vision uses a deep neural network, which is a type of artificial intelligence that can learn from data and perform complex tasks. Tesla Vision analyzes the data from eight external cameras that are mounted on the vehicle, providing 360 degrees of visibility at up to 250 meters of range. Tesla Vision can detect and recognize various objects on the road, such as other vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, traffic signs, traffic lights, lane markings, road edges, and more.

To process all the data from the cameras, Tesla’s Autopilot uses a powerful onboard computer called Hardware 3 (HW3). HW3 can process more than 40 times the data compared to the previous generation system (HW2.5). HW3 runs the Tesla-developed neural net, which is the foundation for how Tesla trains and develops Autopilot. HW3 provides a view of the world that a driver alone cannot access, seeing in every direction simultaneously, and on wavelengths that go far beyond the human senses.

Tesla’s Autopilot offers various features that can assist the driver in different scenarios. Some of these features are standard on every new Tesla vehicle, while others require an additional purchase of the Full Self-Driving Capability package. The currently available features are:

  • Traffic-Aware Cruise Control: Matches the speed of your car to that of the surrounding traffic
  • Autosteer: Assists in steering within a clearly marked lane, and uses traffic-aware cruise control
  • Navigate on Autopilot: Actively guides your car from a highway’s on-ramp to off-ramp, including suggesting lane changes, navigating interchanges, automatically engaging the turn signal and taking the correct exit
  • Auto Lane Change: Assists in moving to an adjacent lane on the highway when Autosteer is engaged
  • Autopark: Helps automatically parallel or perpendicular park your car, with a single touch
  • Summon: Moves your car in and out of a tight space using the mobile app or key
  • Smart Summon: Your car will navigate more complex environments and parking spaces, maneuvering around objects as necessary to come find you in a parking lot
  • Traffic and Stop Sign Control: Identifies stop signs and traffic lights and automatically slows your car to a stop on approach, with your active supervision
  • Autosteer on City Streets: Enables your car to steer itself on city streets where lane markings may be absent or ambiguous
